Taming

How mcMMO's Taming skill works. Call of the Wild summons, Beast Lore, Gore, Sharpened Claws, Thick Fur, Shock Proof, Holy Hound, Environmentally Aware, Fast Food Service, and Pummel, with the real costs, modifiers, and XP values.

Taming is mcMMO's pet skill. It makes your wolves (and summoned pets) tougher, deadlier, and smarter, lets you summon animals on demand, and gives you a tool to inspect tamed creatures. Almost every bonus applies to your tamed wolves while they fight for you. Taming is the one combat skill you mostly level by taming animals, not swinging a weapon.

How you earn XP

Taming has two XP sources:

1. Taming animals. When you tame a creature, you get a flat XP reward based on the species (experience.ymlTaming.Animal_Taming):

AnimalXP
Wolf250
Goat250
Cat / Ocelot500
Axolotl600
Frog900
Horse / Donkey / Mule / Skeleton Horse / Zombie Horse1000
Fox / Panda1000
Parrot1100
Llama1200
Camel1300
Sniffer1500
Bee100

2. Your wolves dealing damage. When a wolf you own hurts something, you earn Taming XP from the damage it deals, at a 3× multiplier:

Taming XP from wolf attacks = damage dealt × (per-mob value × 10) × 3

Summoned pets (Call of the Wild) give no combat XP. Mobs you damage with COTW-summoned wolves are flagged so they award zero XP. To farm Taming XP through combat, use wolves you tamed yourself.

Beast Lore: inspecting animals

Beast Lore is the inspection tool. Hold a bone and left-click a tamed wolf, cat, horse, or other tameable to read out its stats: owner, current/max health, and (for horses, mules, and donkeys) movement speed and jump strength.

This is purely informational: it deals no damage and has no cooldown.

Call of the Wild: summoning pets

Call of the Wild lets you summon a wolf, ocelot/cat, or horse by spending items. Sneak and left-click while holding the right summoning item.

Costs and limits

PetItemCostSummonedLifespanMax at once
WolfBone101240s2
Ocelot / CatCod101240s1
HorseApple101240s1

When you summon, mcMMO removes the item cost from the stack in your hand. If you try to summon more than the per-player limit, it refuses and tells you the cap. Summoned pets despawn after their lifespan (240 seconds by default).

Summoned horses get randomized color, style, and a jump strength clamped between MinHorseJumpStrength (0.7) and MaxHorseJumpStrength (2.0). Summoned wolves spawn with 20 health; summoned horses get 15–30 health.

All of the costs, items, lifespans, and limits above are configurable per-pet in config.yml under Skills.Taming.Call_Of_The_Wild.

Wolf combat bonuses

These bonuses apply to your tamed wolves while they fight. Each is a simple unlock with a fixed effect (no chance roll), except where noted.

Sharpened Claws: bonus wolf damage

ModeUnlocks atEffect
Standard75+2.0 damage to wolf attacks
RetroMode750+2.0 damage to wolf attacks
Taming:
    SharpenedClaws:
        Bonus: 2.0

Gore: critical wolf strike

Gore is described in-game as a critical strike that applies Rupture. In practice it multiplies your wolf's hit by the Gore modifier (2.0), adding +100% bonus damage.

RetroMode150

            Standard: 100
            RetroMode: 1000
        Modifier: 2.0

Gore's chance and bleed don't behave the way the tooltip claims in mcMMO 2.2.054. The /taming command shows a "Gore Chance" that scales up to 100% at level 100, and the description says it "applies Rupture." In the actual combat code, however, Gore is applied to every qualifying wolf hit once unlocked (there is no chance roll in the attack path), and it does not apply a Rupture bleed; it only adds the flat ×2 damage. Treat the displayed Gore Chance as cosmetic and the Rupture text as not wired up in this version.

Pummel: knockback

Pummel gives wolf attacks a chance to knock the target back (a hard shove in the wolf's facing direction).

ModeUnlocks at
Standard20
RetroMode200

The chance is a flat 10% per qualifying wolf hit (Pummel.Chance: 10.0).

Fast Food Service: lifesteal for wolves

When your wolf lands a hit, Fast Food Service gives it a chance to heal itself by the damage it dealt.

ModeUnlocks atHeal chance
Standard2050%
RetroMode20050%
Taming:
    FastFoodService:
        Chance: 50.0

The heal is capped at the wolf's max health, so it can't overheal.

Wolf defensive bonuses

These reduce or redirect incoming damage to your tamed wolves.

Environmentally Aware

ModeUnlocks at
Standard10
RetroMode100

Tamed wolves become smart about hazards:

  • Fall damage is fully cancelled.
  • Fire, lava, and hot-floor damage that would not kill the wolf causes it to instantly teleport to your side instead, and you get a warning message.

Thick Fur

ModeUnlocks atEffect
Standard25Melee/projectile damage ÷ 2; fire immunity
RetroMode250Same

Thick Fur halves physical (entity attack and projectile) damage to the wolf and extinguishes any fire ticks (the wolf takes no burning damage). If the halved damage rounds down to zero, the hit is cancelled entirely.

Taming:
    ThickFur:
        Modifier: 2.0

Holy Hound

ModeUnlocks at
Standard35
RetroMode350

Holy Hound turns magic-type damage into healing: instead of taking Magic, Poison, or Wither damage, the wolf is healed by that amount (capped at max health). Holy Hound shares its unlock check with Environmentally Aware in code, but uses its own permission node.

Shock Proof

ModeUnlocks atEffect
Standard50Explosion/lightning damage ÷ 6
RetroMode500Same

Shock Proof divides explosion and lightning damage to your wolf by 6 (an ~83% reduction). If that rounds to zero, the hit is cancelled.

Taming:
    ShockProof:
        Modifier: 6.0
