Spears

How mcMMO's Spears skill works. Spear Mastery bonus damage, the Momentum speed buff, and Spears Limit Break, with the real chances, damage numbers, and XP formulas for the newer spear combat skill.

Spears is one of mcMMO's newer combat skills, built around fighting with a spear. It is a purely passive combat tree. There is no super ability to ready and fire. Instead it quietly buffs your spear attacks with bonus damage (Spear Mastery and Limit Break) and gives you a chance to gain a burst of movement speed when you strike (Momentum).

You train it the same way as any weapon skill: by dealing damage with a spear. The more damage you deal, the more Spears XP you earn and the more its sub-skills grow.

How combat XP works

Spears XP, like every mcMMO weapon skill, is awarded from the damage you deal, multiplied by a per-mob value:

Spears XP = damage dealt × (per-mob value × 10)

The per-mob value comes from experience.yml under Combat.Multiplier. Some examples (multiply the listed value by 10 for XP per damage point):

The XP damage ceiling is 100 per hit (Combat.XPCeiling.Damage_Limit), and PVP awards XP too (unless against a teammate or a recently-respawned player).

Spear Mastery: passive bonus damage

Spear Mastery silently adds flat damage to your spear hits as it ranks up. There's nothing to activate.

The bonus damage is your rank times a per-rank multiplier:

Spear Mastery bonus = rank × Rank_Damage_Multiplier
                    = rank × 0.4

So at Rank 8 you add 3.2 flat damage to every full-strength spear hit. The bonus is scaled by your attack strength. Swinging before the vanilla attack cooldown refills gives a proportionally smaller share.

Momentum: speed on hit

Momentum gives your spear attacks a chance to grant you a short burst of movement speed (vanilla Speed II). It's a fight-or-chase tool: land a hit, sometimes surge forward.

Momentum's chance is fixed per rank and is scaled by your attack strength (capped at full strength):

The speed buff

When Momentum fires, you gain Speed II (amplifier 2 internally) for a duration that scales with rank:

Momentum duration (seconds) = rank × 2

So Rank 1 lasts 2 seconds and Rank 10 lasts 20 seconds. Momentum won't overwrite a stronger or longer Speed effect you already have. If you're already faster, it holds off.

Spears Limit Break: anti-armor bonus damage

Limit Break is a flat bonus-damage sub-skill aimed mainly at PVP. It adds raw damage that scales with rank, reduced by how well-armored the target is.

The base bonus equals your rank (so +10 raw damage at Rank 10), then it's cut down by the target's total armor quality:

The bonus is also scaled by your attack strength, like Spear Mastery.

By default, Limit Break does nothing in PVE. It only applies against other players unless the server owner sets Skills.Swords.LimitBreak.AllowPVE: true in advanced.yml (this single setting controls Limit Break for all weapon skills; default false). When PVE is allowed, mobs count as fully unarmored, so you get the full 100%-of-rank bonus against them.
