Fishing

How mcMMO's Fishing skill works. Treasure Hunter, Magic Hunter, Shake, Master Angler, Ice Fishing and more, with the real drop tiers, chances, wait-time reductions and XP values.

Fishing turns the most patient activity in Minecraft into a treasure-and-loot machine. You train it simply by catching things on a fishing rod. As you level up you start pulling genuine treasure and enchanted gear out of the water (Treasure Hunter & Magic Hunter), you can shake items off mobs with your hook, fish bites come much faster (Master Angler), and you can even fish through ice.

Fishing has no left-click super ability: its power is in its many always-on sub-skills.

Earning XP

You earn Fishing XP each time you reel in a catch. The amount depends on what you caught:

CatchXP
Cod100
Salmon600
Pufferfish2400
Tropical Fish10000
Shake treasure (per shake)50

When you fish up a treasure (see Treasure Hunter), its own XP value is added on top of the fish XP for that catch.

Fishing has strong anti-AFK / anti-macro protection (ExploitFix.Fishing, on by default). If you reel in catches faster than once per second the fish get "scared" and the catch is ignored. mcMMO also tracks your bobber position: catching more than the over-fish limit (default 10) in the same small area (default range 3 blocks) warns you and stops rewarding you until you move your fishing spot.

Treasure Hunter: fishing up loot

Treasure Hunter is the heart of Fishing. With it, each catch has a chance to be replaced by a treasure from fishing_treasures.yml instead of a plain fish. Treasures are sorted into six rarities (Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythic), and the chance for each rarity grows with your Treasure Hunter tier (rank 1–8).

The drop rates below are the percentage chance per catch for each rarity at each tier (Item_Drop_Rates in fishing_treasures.yml):

TierCommonUncommonRareEpicLegendaryMythic
17.50%1.25%0.25%0.10%0.01%0.01%
26.50%1.75%0.75%0.50%0.05%0.01%

80.10%1.50%6.00%7.50%5.00%0.25%

Notice how the curve shifts: low tiers fish up lots of cheap Common junk, while high tiers trade that away for far more Rare, Epic and Legendary treasure.

Luck of the Sea

The Luck of the Sea enchantment on your rod improves your odds. Rather than the vanilla behaviour, mcMMO scales your treasure roll by luck using the Lure_Modifier (default 4.0):

roll = roll × (1 − luck × 4 ÷ 100)

Lowering the roll value makes it more likely to land inside a rarity's drop band, so each level of Luck of the Sea meaningfully increases treasure odds.

Magic Hunter: enchanted catches

Magic Hunter sits on top of Treasure Hunter: when you fish up an enchantable treasure (armour, tools, weapons), there's a chance it comes out already enchanted. The chance and the strength of the enchantments scale with your Treasure Hunter tier (Enchantment_Drop_Rates):

TierCommonUncommonRareEpicLegendaryMythic
15.00%1.00%0.10%0.01%0.01%0.01%
27.50%1.00%0.10%0.01%0.01%0.01%

87.50%10.0%5.25%1.50%0.75%0.75%

Higher rarities can stack multiple, stronger enchantments. Magic Hunter unlocks at level 20 (Standard) / 200 (RetroMode) and requires Treasure Hunter to be active.

By default mcMMO won't apply enchantments that conflict (e.g. two protection types on one piece). Server owners can allow that with Skills.Fishing.Allow_Conflicting_Enchants: true in config.yml.

Shake: shaking loot off mobs

With Shake you can hook a living mob (or player) with your rod and "shake" an item loose from it: wool off a sheep, a skull off a wither skeleton, even items from a player. The chance per hook depends on your Shake rank:

RankStandard levelRetroMode levelShake chance
11515015%
22020020%
32525025%
43030035%
54040045%
65050055%
76060065%
87070075%

Each successful shake also deals a little damage to the target, max(target max health ÷ 4, 1) capped at 10, so a mob can be shaken at most about four times before it dies. Each shake awards 50 Fishing XP.

Master Angler: faster bites

Master Angler makes fish bite sooner by cutting the random wait time on your bobber. Each rank shaves ticks off both the minimum and maximum wait, and fishing from a boat adds an extra reduction on top.

MasterAngler:
    Tick_Reduction_Per_Rank:
        Min_Wait: 10 # ticks off min-wait per rank
        Max_Wait: 30 # ticks off max-wait per rank
    Boat_Tick_Reduction:
Min_Wait: 10 # extra ticks off while in a boat
        Max_Wait: 30
Tick_Reduction_Caps: # waits never drop below these
        Min_Wait: 40
        Max_Wait: 100

At 20 ticks per second, each Master Angler rank removes 0.5 s from the minimum wait and 1.5 s from the maximum wait, plus another 0.5 s / 1.5 s when you fish from a boat. Wait times are floored at the caps above so fishing never becomes instant. Lure on your rod stacks in too (handled specially to avoid a vanilla bug with high Lure levels).

Ice Fishing

Ice Fishing lets you fish in frozen water: cast your bobber onto ice over water and mcMMO opens a small hole and recasts your line for you, so you can fish in icy biomes. It unlocks at level 5 (Standard) / 50 (RetroMode).

Fisherman's Diet

Fisherman's Diet makes fished food (cod, salmon, pufferfish, etc.) restore more hunger when eaten. It improves in 5 ranks:

Vanilla XP Boost
