Glossary

Plain-language definitions of mcMMO terms - skill, sub-skill, super ability, power level, rank, RetroMode, child skill, Limit Break, and more.

Short definitions of the terms used throughout these docs. Linked to fuller explanations where they exist.

Skill

One of mcMMO's 19 trainable abilities (Mining, Swords, Herbalism, …). Each has its own level and XP, earned by doing the matching action. See the Skills overview.

Sub-skill

A specific bonus inside a skill - e.g. Mining's "Double Drops" or Swords' "Rupture". Most sub-skills improve as the parent skill levels, through ranks.

Super ability

A temporary, chargeable power-up unique to most skills (Super Breaker, Giga Drill Breaker, Serrated Strikes, Berserk, …). You ready your tool, activate it, and it runs for a few seconds before going on cooldown.

Rank

A milestone level at which a sub-skill unlocks or gets stronger. "Rank 3 of Double Drops" means the third tier of that bonus. The level thresholds for each rank are set in Skill Ranks.

Power level

The sum of all your skill levels. A quick single-number measure of overall mcMMO progress, shown by /mcstats. Servers can set a power level cap.

Level cap

The maximum level a single skill can reach. Configurable per skill. Separately, the power level cap limits the total across all skills.

XP / experience

mcMMO's own experience, separate from vanilla Minecraft XP. Each skill tracks its own XP toward its next level. See Experience.

Standard mode / RetroMode

Two leveling scales. Standard uses level caps around 100; RetroMode stretches the same progression over caps around 1000 (the classic older feel). Set server-wide; it changes the numbers, not the mechanics. See Experience.

Child skill

A skill with no XP of its own - its level is the average of two parent skills. mcMMO's child skills are Smelting (Mining + Repair) and Salvage (Repair + Fishing). See Child Skills.

Parent skill

A normal, directly-leveled skill that feeds a child skill's level.

Limit Break

A combat sub-skill that adds flat bonus damage scaling with rank, reduced by the target's armor, PvP-only by default. See Limit Break.

Party

A group of players who share XP, items, and features like party chat, teleport, and alliances. See Parties.

Hardcore mode

Optional penalties that make levels losable: Death Stat Loss (lose levels on death) and Vampirism (a killer steals the victim's levels). See Hardcore Mode.

Permission node

A LuckPerms-style string (e.g. mcmmo.skills.mining) that grants or denies a feature. See Permissions.

Locale

The language/text file controlling every message mcMMO shows. Switch languages or override individual lines without editing the jar. See Localization.

Placeholder

A %mcmmo_…% token (via PlaceholderAPI) that other plugins resolve to live mcMMO data - level, XP, party name, etc. See Integrations.

World blacklist

A list of worlds where mcMMO is fully disabled, set in world_blacklist.txt. See World Blacklist.
